            CUMMINGS, John William Charles

John William Charles Cummings was born in Tottenham, London in 1899 to John Charles Cummings and Julia Caroline Jackson. He was the fifth of their ten children, one dying in infancy, and the only son. In the 1901 census John Charles Snr gave his occupation as ‘Case Makers Porter’ and in 1911 as a ‘Second hand Case Dealer’. In 1911 the three eldest girls were employed while the next four were at school and the youngest were two year old twins. John Charles died in 1912 at the age of forty-four.

John Jnr enlisted at Westminster in the Essex Regiment and in October 1918 was in Ireland with the 1/8th (Cyclist) Battalion. The Battalion had moved to Ireland in February 1918 and was in Tulla and Naas in October. Presumably returning home on leave, he travelled on the 10th on RMS Leinster but he did not survive the sinking, nor was his body recovered.

His name is recorded on the Hollybrook Memorial in Southampton and on the Islington online Virtual Book of Remembrance.
